Our loft is located on a 101-acre farm in Port Perry, Ontario, Canada. Situated on a hill, it faces south and has a relatively clear view to the horizon in all directions. Constructed in 1995 by Silvio and his father, a former custom home builder, it is a two-story structure of almost 1,000 square feet. The loft addresses two issues: The bottom section is, in fact, a three-car garage, and the second floor is the loft. The loft is exceedingly dry. It is comprised of ten sections and three hallways. The five sections facing south comprise the racing area of the loft and the five sections facing north are the breeding sections. All the nest boxes are made with 1" x 1" wire bottoms, as are the perches. Droppings are collected in trays under each tier of perches and nest boxes. Finished in 6,000 square feet of drywall, painted white with a semi-gloss paint, and equipped with a central vacuum system, the entire loft was constructed for ease of maintenance. The entire loft is scraped twice per day. Chores take about 45 minutes each day, morning and evening.
There is no exterior access to the loft; the only entrance is through the inside of the garage for security. Visitors to the loft are required to practice a strict bio-security routine developed to ensure-as much as humanly possible-the control of possible disease vectors.
